Stuff I Use

Computer Stuff

I am a software developer (profesionally, and for fun) so that is the focus of this page. There’s more stuff listed at the bottom.

Hardware

  • My personal laptop: Macbook Air (2022)
    • M2, 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD
    • Currently on MacOS 14 Sonoma
  • My work-supplied laptop: Macbook Pro 16” (2021)
    • M1 Pro, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD
    • Currently on MacOS 13 Ventura
  • Gaming Desktop (Winter 2020 Build)
    • Ryzen 5 5600X | RTX 3060 Ti | 32GB DDR4 | MSI X570 Unify | Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
    • Windows 10
  • Steam Deck (Gaming and general nerd stuff)
    • 512GB
    • SteamOS (Linux)

Retired Computer I haven’t gotten rid of for some reason

  • 2015 13” Macbook Pro
  • Old Desktop (2011 Build)
    • Intel Core i5 2500K | GTX 1060 6GB | 16GB DDR3 | 512GB SSD
    • Linux | Retired Gaming PC –> Home server
  • 2010 HP Envy 14” Laptop

Display

  • I currently only use a single external display - a 27” 4K Dell. It’s minimal and gets the job done well. I would love to upgrade to a 5K Apple display, but I haven’t for two reasons:
    1. They are really expensive.
    2. While it would work great with my mac laptops, they just don’t play nicely with Windows/Linux machines.

Keyboard

  • Currently daily-driving a HHKB Professional Hybrid Type-S
  • I own…maybe half a dozen mechanical keyboards with various types of switches and keycaps. Most of them sit on a shelf looking pretty and collecting dust. Turns out you can only really use one keyboard at a time. 😇

Mouse

  • When using MacOS I use the Apple Magic Trackpad.
  • For Windows/Linux and PC Gaming I use a Logitech G502 Proteus Core. I would like to replace this with a wireless mouse.

Software

These are things I use pretty much every day:

  • Terminal.app (The standard MacOS terminal emulator)
  • tmux for window management in my terminal
  • bash is my shell of choice
  • Rectangle.app for window management elsewhere (Essentla for MacOS in my opinion)
  • vim
  • Chrome
  • VSCode (though I am hoping to replace this with zed).
  • Obsidian
  • Raycast
  • Reminders.app

Everything Else

Transportation

  • 🚗 My wife and I have two cars. I don’t really consider either one “mine” (although my wife would call the Jeep “hers”, despite the fact that she owned the Cruze before we got married, ha!)
    • Chevy Cruze
    • Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • 🚲 Surly Straggler, color: “Salmon Candy Red”
  • 👟 Shoes (probably white) from Kizik, New Balance, or Nike
    • Kizik’s “hands free” thing seems silly, but is an absolute lifesaver with young kids or babies.

Coffee Gear

  • Baratze Encore Grinder (with burr upgrade)
  • Hario V60 Scale
  • Bonavita 1L Variable Temp Electric Kettle
  • Origami Dripper
  • Kalita Wave Dripper

Other Electronics

  • Google Pixel 6 Pro
  • Garmin Forerunner 945
  • Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Ed.
    • In 2022 my third generation Kindle (with a keyboard) from 2010 finally died (well, I cracked the screen). I do miss the physical buttons, but love the better screen, waterproofing, and wireless charging in my new one. Kindles are seriously one of the best investments you can make, even if you still own/read physical books. I love physical books and I still regularly read from my Kindle - often I read digital copies of physical books that I own!
  • Nintendo Switch (launch-era model, neon red and blue)
  • Steam Deck (launch-era model)
  • Some cheap desktop speakers from Logitech (upgrade needed)
  • Headphones
    • My go-to these days is my wireless Sony WH1000XM3.
    • Also keep a pair of Sony MDR-V6s floating around as a back-up/sometimes for listening to certain things.
  • reMarkable Tablet (first gen)

Writing

  • Writing Style: Chicago Manual of Style
    • Yes, I have a physical copy (15th Edition)!
    • Oxford Comma: always
  • Dictionary: Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th Edition)
